WWW Wednesday 23/08/2017

Hi everyone, so this is going up really late, for the simple reason that I have been procrastinating for no apparent reason. You ever have one of those days where everything seems to be too much work, so you don’t bother, yeah that has been my day.

Anyway, moving swiftly on, I am finally doing my second WWW Wednesday, I completely forgot to do one last week but nothing much has changed since then since I am reading super slowly today so here it is:

What are you currently reading:

I am currently reading the Unlikelies by Carrie Firestone, I am only ten pages in so far and progressing slowly, but I can already tell that this will be a fun read that I will hopefully fly through

What did you recently finish reading?

I got asked by my manager at the bookstore I work at to read an Arc of this so I did, yeah…

What do you think you will read next?

percy jackson and the sea of monsters

I recently finished Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, so I want to stay on track on move on with the series. FYI, I obviously loved the Lightning Thief.

And that is it for this WWW Wednesday. If you did this meme, please be sure to leave a link I would be interested to see what you guys are reading 🙂

TBR Tuesday #1

Hello there! Welcome to my first TBR Tuesday Post. This is a new series I will be starting on my blog, and although I am aware of the fact that a TBR Tuesday series does already exist (although I am not too sure who the actual creator is, or what the series involves) I plan on doing this series my own way, so it will be unique in that sense.

Believe me, I thought I was being all creative coming up with this title, only to discover it already exists, ugh.

Anyway, so my aim for this series is to motivate myself and hopefully you, to keep on top of my TBR. I will be keeping track of the amount of books I have added to my TBR and read from my TBR within the week. Now if you didn’t know, TBR stands for To-Be-Read, which is pretty much any book you own that you still need to read.

So I will be aiming to read a book from my TBR, for every new book I buy. I will also be including reading goals for every week to keep things a little interesting.

So feel free to join in if you want to and let me know how you get on if you do 🙂

Okay and now that I am done rambling, let me get started with my first TBR Tuesday…

TBR Tuesday #1

TBR pile: 55 books
Books Bought: 0
Reading goal for the week: Read Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters

And that is all, obviously as the weeks progress I will have more to say about how I did within the week. So I think that will be all, I hope you guys have an amazing week further and read loads of book! Bye for now 🙂

Tootles Gaby 🙂

Some exciting news!

Hi everyone, so I finally did something that I have been wanting to do for about a year now. I created my own Booktube channel! My first video went live this morning and I am super amped to continue making videos and getting involved in the community.

That being said, I will be continuing on with my blog. My plan for now is to continue with my reviews on my blog but they will be kept spoiler free, where as on my channel I will be doing book discussion so there will be Major Spoilers. I will alos be continuing with my tags and such on this channel. My schedule for now, it is subject to change, a blog post every Wednesday and Friday and a Video every Sunday. I will possibly post more within the week depending on my schedule but this will be the minimum amount of posts I would like to do within the week.

So, if you are curious I would really appreciate if you go and check out my first Booktube video where I do the Booktube Newbie Tag.

Booktube Newbie Tag!

And I think that is all for today, thank you so much for checking out my blog and I hope you have an amazing day 🙂

WWW Wednesday, 09 August 2017.

Hi everyone, so today I thought I would try something new and that is WWW Wednesday, this is a meme hosted by Sam at Taking on a world of words. I have seen this everywhere for for some reason have never taken a part in it, why? I don’t know. But I am now so lets get started…

First off for those of you who, for some reason-possibly life under a rock, don’t know what WWW Wednesday day, it is simply three questions that you have to answer 1) what are you currently reading 2)what did you recently finish reading and 3)what are you planning on reading next.

Now I have to give credit where credit is due so shout out to Kourtni at Kourtni Reads, whose post for inspired me to do mine, so be sure to go and check hers out she has an amazing list of books this week WWW Wednesday by Kourtni Reads

So now lets get right on into the questions:

What are you currently reading?

Right now I am reading two books, I am under halfway through Because You Love to Hate Me which is an anthology consisting of 13 stories of villainy written by 13 popular authors who were given prompts by 13 popular book-tubers.

because you love to hate me.jpg

I have also started reading Percy Jackson and the lightning thief for the first time, I know for shame but I am determined to knock out most of the series this month.

Percy jackson and the lightning thief

What have you recently finished reading?

I have actually had a really good reading month so far, having read 3 books so far this week but the most recent book I have finished is Savor the first book in the warm delicacy series by Megan Duncan. This is a paranormal romance all about vampires and is set in a world where vampires are in control of the government and in exchange for not biting humans they have blood donation centers set up, and once you are eighteen you have to go sign up to donate blood. It is then discovered that our main character Claire has pure-blood and is then “forced” to join the royal vampire family and become their princess and the story kicks off from there, overall this was a face paced and enjoyable read, I gave it 3/5 stars on Goodreads.

What are you planning on reading next?

Once I am finished with Because You Love to Hate Me, I am planning on moving on to the Unlikelies by Carrie Firestone, a story that follows a girl named Sadie who is recorded saving a baby and the video goes viral. Sadie is them asked to start a group of homegrown heroes, who together plan to right all the wrongs in their local community but they soon realize that they might be a little over their heads while trying to help a heroin addicted friend.

I am also hoping to get to Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters once I have finished the Lightning thief.

percy jackson and the sea of monsters.jpg

And that is all for this post, I hope you guys have had an amazing week so far, and let me know what you are reading or what you think I should be reading, I am always looking for new books and authors to try out. Have a lovely rest of the week!

Book Title Tag, it is harder than it looks…

Hello there! Long time no write, that made more sense in my head :/. I have been in such a reading and writing slump and I have avoided anything reminding me of that fact, including my blog unfortunately.

But I’m back and hopefully better than ever and what better way to get back into the swing of things, than by doing something that I have always enjoyed, participating in a book tag!

I came across the Book Title Tag while I was scouring my subscriptions on the YouTube’s and I saw that Jessie the Reader did this tag, here is that link if you want to go and check his video out, it is hilarious ->Titling my life with book titles . The original creator of this tag is Rachel Reads and YouTube so be sure to go and check out that video if you want more details on how to actually attempt this tag->The books title tag (original).

So without further adue, here is my attempt at the Book Title Tag:

Title that is the story of my life:

For this one I will have to go with Reckless (Cornelia Funke). This is not necessarily accurate a 100% of the time but for the most part I am pretty reckless when it comes to decision making and such. And also because I couldn’t think of another title that I could honestly say is a good representation of my life.

Title that describes your perfect weekend:

Passenger (Alexandra Bracken) because I enjoy long road trips when I don’t have to drive… Do you get it 🙂

Title of an adventure you’d like to go on:

download (1).jpg

Hmmm…this one is tricky.Lets go with around the world in 80 days (Jules Verne). Is this a cop-out, I feel like this is a cop-out but I am going to stick with it. So yes, I want to travel around the world in 80 days 🙂

Title you want to name your child:

This on was surprisingly easy, Briar rose (Jana Oliver). Just kidding, I literally had to dig through my bookshelves to find this one but I feel like it is appropriate.

Title your ideal job:

Fangirl (Rainbow Rowell). I just want to be a professional fangirl.

Title the ideal place you’d like to visit:

download (2).jpg

For this one I would have to go with Caraval (Stephanie Garber). Because as dangerous as it is, it sound amazing.

Title your love life:

download (21)

So easy, the upside of unrequited (Becky Albertalli) Sad but True.

Title your kingdom you want to rule or name:

The final empire! (Brandon Sanderson) I would conquer all other empires and be the last one standing. mwahahahahaha!

Title you’d name your band:

download (14)

I think the six of crows would sound pretty badass!

And that is all folks! Have you done this tag please comment a link down below I would love to see them.

Have an amazing week and good luck to those who are participating in the annual Booktube-A-Thon. Have fun!

Tootles, Gaby:)

Tigers Watch ARC Review.

I received and ARC of Tigers Watch in exchange for an honest review.

Author: Julia Ember
Publication date: August 22nd 2017
180 pages
Genre: Young Adult Fiction

Rating: 3/5 stars

Sixteen-year-old Tashi has spent their life training as a inhabitor, a soldier who spies and kills using a bonded animal. When the capital falls after a brutal siege, Tashi flees to a remote monastery to hide. But the invading army turns the monastery into a hospital, and Tashi catches the eye of Xian, the regiment’s fearless young commander.

Tashi spies on Xian’s every move. In front of his men, Xian seems dangerous, even sadistic, but Tashi discovers a more vulnerable side of the enemy commander—a side that draws them to Xian.

When their spying unveils that everything they’ve been taught is a lie, Tashi faces an impossible choice: save their country or the boy they’re growing to love. Though Tashi grapples with their decision, their volatile bonded tiger doesn’t question her allegiances. Katala slaughters Xian’s soldiers, leading the enemy to hunt her. But an inhabitor’s bond to their animal is for life—if Katala dies, so will Tashi.

Tigers Watch concentrates on the concept of “inhabitator” a unique idea where an inhabitators link their souls to an animal, sharing their thoughts and life span. This unique concept is what initially drew me to the book.

The synopsis definitely doesn’t do the book justice, as it only hints at the romantic aspects of the novel and there is so much more to this story than romance.

That being said, I wish more attention had been paid to other aspects of the story other romance.

There was very little world and character building in this novel, which to me at least, is something that should be a major aspect in a first book in a series. I actually wish that the fast pace of the story could have actually been slowed down so that more attention could have been paid to each individual scene and character.

However, what I learned about the world and characters within the novel has intrigued me and I am looking forward to the second book where hopefully I will get to learn a bit more about both.

Looking forward to seeing what you guys think:)

And of course I need to give a shout out to the original creators of this tag, who I believe are Readlikewildfire and Earl Grey Books on Youtube. Sp shout out to you guys for creating this awesome tag.

So lets get started…

Best book of the year so far?

Personally, I loved ACOWAR. Not only was it the epic conclusion to one of my favorite series but it is also written by one of my favorite authors, the amazing Sarah J Maas.

Best sequel you have read?

Lord of Shadows.jpg

I haven’t actually read that many sequels this year but my favourite has to be Lord of Shadows because anything Cassandra Clare writes is pure gold.

New releases you haven’t read but want to?

Ministry of Utmost happiness

I really want to read the Ministry of Utmost Happiness by Arundhati Roy, this isn’t the kind of novel I generally gravitate towards, mainly because it isn’t a YA novel, but I skimmed the first few pages of the book one day at work and I was hooked.

Most anticipated release for the second half of the year?

tower of dawn.jpg

Definitely tower of dawn by Sarah J. Maas. I absolutely adore Sarah’s writing no matter what book it is, so any new release from her is an anticipated release 🙂

Biggest Disappointment?

Shade me.jpg

I think out of all of the books I read this year, Shade Me by Jennifer Brown was my least favorite. The plot just seemed to drag and I didn’t enjoy any of the characters within the novel.

Biggest Surprise?

Frostblood by Elly Blake, for sure. I bought this book on an impulse and it just sat on my shelf for a while until I picked it up on a whim and boy am I glad I did.

Favorite new author?

ashley poston.jpg

Ashley Poston the author of Geekerella. Her level of awesomeness is inspiring.

Newest fictional crush?

Newest favourite character?

The bad-ass Emma Carstairs. I want to be her and her best friend at the same time.

Books that made you cry?

Favorite book to movie adaptation that you’ve seen this year?

Has to be Everything, Everything, the movie was adorable, and was a fairly accurate representation of the book. Definitely worth a watch!

Favorite review you have written this year?

For me it has to be my review of Geekerella by Ashley Poston. It was one of my first reviews on this blog and the first one where I started playing with photography and overall I just worked really hard on it and I am proud of it 🙂

Most beautiful book you have bought or received this year?

Pretty covers.jpg

Don’t make me choose. I love them all!

What book/s do you need to read before the end of this year?

Books to read.jpg

  • Legend by Marie Lu
  • Young Elites by Marie Lu
  • The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson
  • Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

And that is all the questions in this book tag. If you have done this tag please leave a a link I would love to check it out and let me know if you agreed or disagreed with any of my choices, I would love to hear from you:)

Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon. Book and Movie Review. (Spoiler Alert)

Everything, Everything follows the story of Maddy, and 18 year old girl who is allergic to everything. For the past 17 years Maddy has never left her house. Her days are made up of scheduled meals and check-ups. That is until Olly moves in next door. Olly poses a threat to Maddy’s safety bubble as he is determined to reach out to the mysterious girl who he has only ever seen through her bedroom window.

I am going to be splitting this review into 3 sections, section 1 will be dedicated to the movie, 2 will be dedicated to the book and section 3 will be a comparison between the two. Each section will be clearly marked to feel feel free to skip to the sections that interest you the most.

Quick bit of info:
~ Released on May 19th 2017
~ Director: Stella Meghie

First of all let me just say that I really enjoyed the movie as a separate entity to the book, this is probably due to the fact that I watched the movie before I read the book. However, as much as it goes against my very bookworm nature, I actually preferred it this way as I went into the cinema without any preconceived notions about what I should expect. This also prevented me from nitpicking details that are present in the movie that are not present in the book, these details added significantly to the cinematic experience overall.

I also really enjoyed the added visual text within scenes that added a quirkiness to the scenes that is present in Nicola Yoon’s writing. Awesome attention to detail!

Speaking of quirkiness, I really enjoyed the scenes where Maddy and Olly were having conversation in on of Maddy’s architecture models, with the astronaut just chilling in the background. There were so random but hilarious!

And the awkward scene where Maddy and Olly meet face to face for the first time was everything! The acting is definitely what made the scene, from the hunched shoulders, fidgeting, averted gazes and stunted speech, everything screamed awkwardness and I loved every single second of it.

On that note, I just wanted to add that I probably would not have enjoyed the movie half as much as I did if it weren’t for the amazing acting present in this movie especially that of Amandla Stenberg (Maddy) and Nick Robinson (Olly).

But on a slightly less positive not there were some aspects of the film that detracted from the overall story. Such as the fact that the issues of domestic abuse within Olly’s household, Maddy’s mom’s mental illness and Olly’s character are barely shown.

These aspects of the story add a significant amount to the emotional impact of the story and without them, the movie was left feeling more like a light-hearted romance than an emotional journey.

Quick bit info:
~written by Nicola Yoon
~ Illustrated by David Yoon
~Published on September 1st 2015

Nicola Yoon is fast becoming one of my favorite authors. Her quirky writing style and ability to write a sentence that can hit you hard in the feels, makes me want to read anything she writes, so far I am 2 for 2.

However, talking about the book specifically I really enjoyed the little details that Nicola included in the story such as Maddy’s obsession with Astronauts and Olly’s all black style choices. These seemingly insignificant details contributed quite a lot to my enjoyment of the book.

I also really enjoyed the depth in which I got to explore the characters, from their quirks to their fears and their later character development.

Another major aspect of the book where themes of Mental Illness, Alcoholism and Domestic Abuse which where described in such a respectful yet eerily realistic way.

And the adorable illustration done by Nicola’s husband David added so much to my enjoyment of the book, along wit the added details of medical documents and lists. This overall kept the story engaging.

I also really enjoyed how slowly the relationship developed between Maddy and Olly in the book, it was slow and stunted which not only made it more realistic but adorable at the same time.

Overall I think they did a really good job with the book to movie adaptation with most of the important scenes from the book being directly “word for word” emulated in the movie, such as the hilarious Bundt cake scene.

There are some subtle differences between the book and the movies such as the fact that Olly is bald in the book but none of these bothered me as they didn’t really have a major impact of the story-line or my enjoyment of the movie.

I also really enjoyed the fact that there are some scenes in the movie that are not present in the book. This is because it did not affect the story-line and it improved the cinematic experience of the movie. An example is the scene in the movie where Olly decorates the wall of the sun-room with images of the ocean, so cute.

So here are my final thoughts:

~ The movie is really enjoyable with random and quirky details and scenes that give it a really lighthearted feel. The acting is also outstanding and I highly suggest you watch the movie before you read the book, scandalous I know.

~ The book is an absolute must read for any contemporary fan out there. I packs more of an emotional punch than the movie does but this is due to Nicola’s uncanny ability to hit you in the feels with a few carefully chosen words. It is a quick read due to the structure of the writing, I managed to finish it in one sitting.
