Reading Habits Tag

Another Tuesday, another tag. Let’s do this!

I recently saw that Becca and Mike at Books and Looks on Youtube do this tag and after watching their video, Books and Looks video, I was inspired to do this tag myself, so here it is:

1.Do you have a specific place that you read?

Nope, I will read anywhere at any time. I am nuts like that. I cannot be bored so I carry a book everywhere with me so I can whip it out any chance I get.

2. Book mark or random piece of paper?

I used to only use book marks, but lately I have been using sticky notes more and more. They are just super convenient because I have them spread all over my house and I also use them to make notes while I am reading, so I am killing two birds with one stone.

3. Can you stop reading anywhere in a book or do you have to finish the chapter?

I have to finish the chapter, not really because I will get lost when I pick up the book again but more because of the fact that it just irks me for no real reason. I also like to measure my progress in books by chapters not page numbers.

4. Do you eat of drink while reading?

Kind of, I set up snacks and drinks up for myself when I read but I tend to forget about them until I finish a few chapter. I constantly have to reheat heated foods and beverages because they always go cold before I get to them. Anyone else have this issue?

5. Music or TV when reading?

I personally cannot read in silence but I cannot read while music is playing in the background, I find myself focusing on the music and singing along and then forgetting everything I have read. That being said, I love having the TV on in the background, mostly with horror movies because I am chicken, so I won’t want to watch the TV instead of reading, weird I know.

6. One book at a time or several?

I am a one book at a time person, because I am a major mood reader so when I am in the mood for a specific book, I tend to just sit and read the book and most likely finish it. I struggle with reading multiple book because I often the the plots and story line’s mixed up and I more often than not end up not finishing books when I try reading more than one at a time.

7. Reading at home or elsewhere?

I funnily enough struggle to read at home, because I more often than not end up watching Youtube Gaming videos than reading. So I often read at work or the library or pretty any where else.

8.  Read out loud or silently?

Definitely silently, I personally struggle with pronouncing words, so reading out loud take a lot of time and effort for me, and I read in public, so yeah.

9. Do you read ahead or skip pages?

Yup, I know, I know but when I am reading a book that I am not fully invested in, i tend to skip ahead or even read a few sentences at the end of the book, just to see whether it is continuing with the book. I also tend to skip chapters when it follows a POV that I don’t like, I often have to go back and read these to understand what is going on but it is satisfying in the moment.

10. Breaking the spine or keeping it pristine?

I would rather chew my left toe than break a book spine, if that answers your question 🙂

11. Do you write in your books?

Nope, I prefer to write in notebook or on sticky notes where I can keep my notes organised. I used to write in my books in school and it drove me insane because I always ran out of space and it really wasn’t neat.

And that is all the questions in this tag. I hope you guys have had an amazing day, and I will see you in the nest post.

Tootles, Gaby 🙂

Maybe in Paris by Rebecca Christiansen ( Spoiler free review )

maybe-in-paris-rebecca-christiansen-683x1024.jpg

Title : Maybe in Paris
Author : Rebecca Christiansen
Published : 20th of June 2017

Keira Braidwood lands in Paris with her autistic brother, Levi, and high hopes. Levi has just survived a suicide attempt and months in the psych ward—he’s ready for a dose of the wider world. Unlike their helicopter mom and the doctors who hover over Levi, Keira doesn’t think Levi’s certifiable. He’s just . . . quirky. Always has been.

Those quirks quickly begin to spoil the trip. Keira wants to traipse all over Europe; Levi barely wants to leave their grubby hotel room. She wants to dine on the world’s cuisine; he only wants fast food. Levi is one giant temper tantrum, and Keira’s ready to pull out her own hair.

She finally finds the adventure she craves in Gable, a hot Scottish bass player, but while Keira flirts in the Paris Catacombs, Levi’s mental health breaks. He disappears from their hotel room and Keira realizes, too late, that her brother is sicker than she was willing to believe. To bring him home safe, Keira must tear down the wall that Levi’s sickness and her own guilt have built between them.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review :

Rating :  4/5 stars

First and foremost before I get into my review I want to give a trigger warning for attempted suicide within the book, just to warn you guys.

In hand with that I just really quickly want to bring up an aspect of the novel that really bothered me. And that is how mental illness is handles within the novel. A character with a mental illness within the novel was referred to as being broken and although I myself cannot speak on how that would convey to someone who does have a mental illness, I can say that I found this to be very disrespectful and upsetting.

The novel is also not an #own voices novel, I saw in a comment made by the author that her brother has a mental illness and that this novel is inspired by their relationship. Rebecca did do a blog post detailing the history and background of the novel which I will link if you want to go and find that out. Authors post.

That being said, this issue didn’t detract too much from my rating of the novel because I feel that that the metal illness aspect of the novel plays a minute role within the story line and I do not want to judge an entire story on on small part.

Putting that aside, I did really enjoy this novel for the most part. Even though I went into the novel expecting to be like the movie Monte Carlo – which I loved- but sadly that is not the case.

The protagonist within the novel, Keira, is a truly relatable character. I found myself sympathizing with her struggles as she was faced with various moral obstacles as well as her struggle to find herself within the novel and her never ending boy troubles, definitely relatable. Her growth within the novel is heart-warming and although I feel that it a subtle growth, it is also a more realistic growth than those I have seen in many contemporary novels.

Kiera also experiences some symptoms of anxiety within the novel, but they are fleeting and barely touched upon. On one hand I wish that aspect of her character was explored more but I am also wary of how it would have been handled.

The other characters within the novel were also really enjoyable each had their own individual quirks and stories and I can definitely appreciate how much each character is explored within the novel.

The family dynamic within the novel was also intriguing, because of the fact that is so realistic. Keira’s issues with her mom, Levi’s issues with accepting his stepdad and the generally familial arguments in this novel, do ,in my opinion, reflect many family’s. I also really enjoyed the importance that each of this issues are given in the novel, they remain a relevant factory in the story line throughout.

The historical tidbits within the book were also really interesting, I definitely finished the novel knowing more about Paris than I did in the beginning. That being said, I also enjoyed how we got to explore Paris within the novel, from the Eiffel Tower to Notre Dame, it was really entertaining and fascinating to learn about each individual location.

Overall, the book was so much more than the typical romance than the synopsis suggests it is. It is a simple, heart warming and quirky coming of age novel.

Have you guys read this book? What did you think of it if you have? I would be interested to hear from you guys. I hope you have had an amazing week.

WWW Wednesday – 11/10/2017

So another Wednesday, another WWW Wednesday post, but I am actually looking forward to this one because I have finally managed to drag myself out of my reading slump, that has been plaguing me for the last few months, YAY!

So in case you didn’t know, WWW Wednesday is a meme hosted by World or Words -> World of Words-WWW Wednesday-2017/10/11

What am I currently reading?

download.jpg

I am about 60 pages in The Dreadful Tale of Prosper Redding, and I am really enjoying it so far, I feel like this books screams Halloween and I am all for it.

This novel follows Prosper, a boy who has been cursed to live with a demon inside of him due to the fact that his great(x a million)-grandfather broke a deal with the demon. I am surprised by the how dark this book is so far for a middle-grade book, but I am living for it!

What did you recently finish reading?

25324111._UY200_.jpg

I recently finished And I Darken by Kiersten White, and I gave it a 2/5 stars. This novel is said to be a gender-swap and retelling of Vlad the impaler and has received amazing reviews almost everywhere.

The novel just didn’t live up to the hype for me, I didn’t like any of the characters, the pacing was very slow and quite frankly it just bored me to death.

What do you think you will read next?

I don’t have a specific book in mind to read next, I find myself being more of a mood reader lately so I just pick up what I am in the mood for then and there, but I am planning to hopefully pick up Warcross by Marie Lu sometime soon.

I am not a hundred percent sure what this book is about, all I know is it has a kickass female character who is a hacker and is asked to hack into a game, to track someone, I think. I know not super helpful sorry, but I have heard nothing but good things about this book and I can’t wait to pick it up.

And that is it folks, I hope you guys are having an amazing week so far, let me know what you have been up to in the comments, I would love to hear from you.

Halloween Book Tag

Hello everyone, Halloween is upon us and to get into the swing of things I thought I would start off with a fun Halloween themed book tag.

  1. Favourite horror book?

I have to be honest and say I am not the biggest fan of horror book, to be honest they scare the crap out of me. So I am limited with my options here, does Coraline by Neil Gaiman count? Well I guess it is going to have to because that is all I got.

2. Scariest moment in a book you have read?

As I said, I am not much of a horror book fan so I am going to have to go with a scene from a contemporary that thoroughly disturbed me and that was a scene from The Chosen One by Carol Lynch Williams, where an elder continuously dunks a toddler’s head under water to get her to stop crying. This is by far the most disturbing scene I have ever read in a book.

3. Have you dressed up as a book character for Halloween?

No I haven’t but I am planning to dress up as Manon from Throne of Glass, hopefullly I will be able to channel all that bad-ass-ery.

4. What do you think your favourite fictional character would dress up as for Halloween?

Well considering my favourite fictional character is Patch from the Hush Hush series, I honestly think he would just show up in a black shirt and black jeans and not give a fuck.

5. What is your favourite type of horror?

I enjoy paranormal horror’s because I don’t the fact that they can only be seen when they want to be seen, I am not okay with that!

6. If books were as cheap as candy, which book would you give out to Trick or Treaters?

Any books from the series of unfortunate events series by Lemony Snicket, they just scream Halloween in my opinion.

7. My Halloween TBR:

  • IT by Stephen King
  • The Snowman by Jo Nesbo
  • Dreadful Tales of Prosper Redding by Alexandra Bracken

8. Recommend some Halloween reads:

  • Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket
  • Goosebumps

And that is about it for this tag. I hope you guys are having a great weeks so far and please let me know if you have any Halloween reads recommendations.

Books Read : 3

In my opinion, there is no better feeling than having a really good reading week after a bunch of mediocre ones.

In the past few weeks, I have really struggled to finish any of the books I have picked up, but luckily it seems that I am back on track and have managed to start and finish three books within the past week, something that I am pretty proud of, not gonna lie.

So about those books…

I started the week off strong by picking up Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan.

percy jackson and the sea of monsters

5/5 Stars

I really enjoyed how Percy’s character has already progressed from much from the first novel, I found him to be a lot more relatable. I also really enjoyed how Percy and Annabeth’s relationship developed throughout the novel, it was heart-warming to “witness”. And overall I just really enjoyed the pace the book, there weren’t any chapter that dragged for me, I managed to finish this book in just under two days so it was a fairly quick read.

Once I finished Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monster I was in the mood for a historical romance for some reason for I picked up Until Forever by Johanna Lindsey.

51M3poVVQyL.SX316.jpg

2/5 Stars

I went into this book fully expecting to enjoy it, as I have all her other novels but boy was I wrong.

Everything about this novel just irritated me. The main character contradicts herself though out the entire novel, it got to the point that I actually despised the main character by the end of the novel. She is portrayed to be a “modern day” woman but has conservative views on everything, She also is meant to be a feminist character but more often than not takes it to the extreme of coming across as hating men. Overall, she is just a highly frustrating character that I really didn’t like.

The novel was also very slow paced with little to no progression in the story line in each chapter. I also felt repetitive at times as the story consistently shifts between several time periods.

The only aspect of the books that I found intriguing was the theory behind time travel within the story, but it also tended to be confusing because I personally feel that that aspect of the story was really built upon, which I feel like it should have been.

Overall I just don’t recommend this novel but I have read many of her other book and really enjoyed them, so rather gives those a shot.

I then finished the week off by reading The Assassin’s Blade by Sarah J. Maas.

4/5 Stars

If you want to know my thoughts on this book, I have done a non-spoiler review for it ~> The Assassins Blade by Sarah J. Maas (Spoiler free review)

And that is it for this week, I hope you guys have had an amazing reading weeks so far and please let me know what you have been reading, I would be interested to hear from you guys.

The Assassins Blade by Sarah J. Maas (Spoiler free review)

4/5 stars

The Assassin’s Blade consists of five Throne of Glass Novellas that serve as prequels to the Throne of Glass series. In each of the novellas we are taken chronologically through the events in Celaena Sardothien’s life that led to her being where she is in the beginning of Throne of Glass.

I have just finished the novel and I am still honestly recovering…

First of all I feel like it is necessary to stress how important it is to read this novel before reading Empire of Storms, a lot of helpful information about characters and previous events are given in this novel that are brought up in Empire of Storms.

I read this novel after Empire of Storms and I can see where it would have been helpful in understanding plot developments within Empire of Storms.

Now my biggest issue with this book is actually something I caused, which was reading this novel after completing the first five books in the Throne of Glass series. This hindered my reading experience because I knew what the outcome on each novella is essentially supposed to be, because they are brought up in Empire of Storms.

But at the same time I really enjoyed linking the details from the novellas with events throughout the series, it gave me a much clearer picture of the developments within the series so far.

So if you haven’t read Assassins Blade yet, I highly suggest you do before continuing on with the rest of the story, it will enhance your reading.

Overall I think it is a true testament to Sarah skills as an author the she still managed to create a novel where even though I knew what the ending was it still impacted me because of how it was delivered. ( Can you tell I love SJM’s writing 🙂 )

TBR Tuesday #2

Okaayyy…So this week has been a fail with operation TBR. As in I didn’t finish as single book, yeah I don’t know either.

I went into this week planning on reading at least two books, but I have been reading so slow lately and even though I am really enjoying it, it doesn’t really help me with tackling my TBR pile…ugh.

So with that little ramble her is where my TBR stands this week:

TBR pile: 57 books
Books bought: 3
Books read from TBR: 1

So not a great start but hey, I am reading and enjoying the slow pace that I am maintaining so I am not too bummed about it.

Oh, how rude of me I didn’t even ask, how has your guys week been so far? Read any books? Done anything exciting? Please be sure to let me know because I am nosy like that 🙂

WWW Wednesday 23/08/2017

Hi everyone, so this is going up really late, for the simple reason that I have been procrastinating for no apparent reason. You ever have one of those days where everything seems to be too much work, so you don’t bother, yeah that has been my day.

Anyway, moving swiftly on, I am finally doing my second WWW Wednesday, I completely forgot to do one last week but nothing much has changed since then since I am reading super slowly today so here it is:

What are you currently reading:

unlikelies

I am currently reading the Unlikelies by Carrie Firestone, I am only ten pages in so far and progressing slowly, but I can already tell that this will be a fun read that I will hopefully fly through

What did you recently finish reading?

download.jpg

I got asked by my manager at the bookstore I work at to read an Arc of this so I did, yeah…

What do you think you will read next?

percy jackson and the sea of monsters

I recently finished Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, so I want to stay on track on move on with the series. FYI, I obviously loved the Lightning Thief.

TBR Tuesday #1

Hello there! Welcome to my first TBR Tuesday Post. This is a new series I will be starting on my blog, and although I am aware of the fact that a TBR Tuesday series does already exist (although I am not too sure who the actual creator is, or what the series involves) I plan on doing this series my own way, so it will be unique in that sense.

Believe me, I thought I was being all creative coming up with this title, only to discover it already exists, ugh.

Anyway, so my aim for this series is to motivate myself and hopefully you, to keep on top of my TBR. I will be keeping track of the amount of books I have added to my TBR and read from my TBR within the week. Now if you didn’t know, TBR stands for To-Be-Read, which is pretty much any book you own that you still need to read.

So I will be aiming to read a book from my TBR, for every new book I buy. I will also be including reading goals for every week to keep things a little interesting.

So feel free to join in if you want to and let me know how you get on if you do 🙂

Okay and now that I am done rambling, let me get started with my first TBR Tuesday…

TBR Tuesday #1

TBR pile: 55 books
Books Bought: 0
Reading goal for the week: Read Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters

And that is all, obviously as the weeks progress I will have more to say about how I did within the week. So I think that will be all, I hope you guys have an amazing week further and read loads of book! Bye for now 🙂
